I have lived in Oakley, Utah now for over three years and am locally
know for saving the Oakley Skate Park for the skater kids a few summers
ago. I really have discovered what an awesome place Oakley is to
live. The beautiful views of Kamas Valley and the surrounding
mountains, the many horses, cows, and friendly local people make it
quite a unique community to live in amongst such a rapidly growing
Summit County. The one prevailing aspect to me that makes it like
it is is the weather. In the summertime (when living is easy), June
is about as beautiful as it gets anywhere. Then we see winters harsh
below zero temperatures and fierce winds. One must be very prepared
for the weather living here. We often see one week it is raining,
the next with freezing temperatures, the next balmy as the snow
starts to melt.
The only way I had to tell the temperature was an old indoor-outdoor
thermometer that seemed not very accurate. I never really had the
correct readings. So for Christmas of 2006, I bought myself a
Wireless Weather Station and set it up in my backyard. My property
is in the middle of the valley on the southern most part of Oakley
City looking south to the open fields. It is very wide open and the
wind blows incredibly hard. The 2 huge old Chinese Elms sway
amazingly back and forth in the wind.
My Wireless Weather Station is a WS-2315 (433 MHz) made by La
Crosse. From the thermo-hygro transmitter (which is attached to the
rain and wind sensor outside) it transmits data wirelessly to the
base unit in the house. Using the wireless 433 MHz connection data
is updated from 16 to 128 second intervals depending on wind speed
and rain activity. If I was using a hard wire cable connection, data
is updated every 8 seconds. The base unit is connected to my
computer where the current weather information is displayed and all
the imported data is received on the Heavy Weather software. From
there the data is imported by Microsoft Excel software and then
saved to an .html web page. The real bonus I soon found out was the capability to up-load
the current data to a web page from my computer if it is running and
connected to the internet. I have had 6 years experience with
web-site design and development and currently am the webmaster for
web-sites like www.ParkCityNursery.com www.HeberRanch.com and more.
Then why
was I interested in creating OakleyWeather.com? This last Christmas
my cable went out on Sunday afternoon the 24th Christmas
Eve. I called All West for 2 days and they never got back to me
until I went in the office and yelled at them on Tuesday the 26th
when they were open. From this experience somehow came the idea. The more I thought
about it the more fell into place.
Everybody that I talked to about it was very positive. The website would be
available to everybody in Summit Valley 24/7. Would this idea work
and could I make a living here in Oakley? OakleyWeather.com with
Classifieds, Business Listings, Local Events and News for Summit
